Let me start out by saying I love this city. Corruption and crime aside there is no place else on earth I’d rather live. With the exception of maybe Dublin, Ireland. The weather may be bi-polar and the streets look like Swiss cheese 80% of the time but it’s where I grew up. I grew up visiting the museums and going to sporting events and the beaches. But there is evil afoot and they hide under the name “Friends of the Parks.”

These are the NIMBYS who are suing the city to prevent the construction of the Lucas museum. A place that would bring such wonder and joy to not just chicago but the Midwest, the nation, and the world as a whole

Kinja'd!!!

Some may call it an eyesore but compared to the spaceship they landed on Solider Field it’s not half bad.

You see these FOTP people seek to protect the lakefront, after all theres only so much of it to go around. This is what their mission is. But infact what they are really protecting is a parking lot...yes you read that correctly, A fucking parking lot.

Now parking is very important dont get me wrong, especially in a city as dense as chicago. But this parking lot doesnt get used all that much. In fact out of 365 days its used for maybe 10 days total. You see its an overflow parking lot for Chicago Bears tailgating. Its not a hospital parking lot, nor is it parking for a childrens orphanage. Its a gray slab of asphalt where people get drunk before they get even more drunk on 10 dollar miller lites.

The FOTP says this is an important spot for chicagoans and they dont want the “monstrosity” that is the Lucas museum setting up on that land to take away precious parking or sitelines for the highrises across Lake Shore Drive.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the propsed location, with the highlighted area being old mccormick place and the parking lot to the top of it.

Compare those two images and tell me which youd rather look at, a beautiful green space with some interesting arcitecture or black and gray slabs of asphalt, steel, and concrete. Old McCormick sits as a relic of Chicago’s past and the Lucas Museum would revitalize the lakefront.

The mayor wants this museum and say what you want about Rham but he knows the value of this museum coming to chicago. Even the heads of many of the major museums in the Chicagoland area have supported the project. But these NIMBYS are stubborn. They want to keep the city down. I even saw a comment the other day that read the city didn’t need another museum taking up space. How could a person actually think a city has too many museums? It’s incomprehensible to me that someone could be so simple minded. To not want to enrich their life by visiting some of the most world renowned museums.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I apologize for this lengthy rant but it’s something that’s been eating at me for the past few months and I feel like the voice of the projects supporters is getting smaller and smaller. I want this museum to happen. Not just for me and my nerdiness but to share with my son when he gets older. To teach him the ways of the Force and why a bullwhip and pistol can defeat thousands of Nazis. Those behind the FOTP need to drop the silly lawsuit keeping the project down.

TL;DR George Lucas wants to build his museum here and some NIMBYS are fighting it over a parking lot and a disused convention center.

That second image reminds me what a damn shame the closure and destruction of Meigs Field was.

I wouldn't want a Lucas museum in my city either, what with the risk of electrical fires. I mean, Chicago already burned once.

Meigs field was unfortunate in the way it closed but northerly island is a great place to run and has a pretty nice concert venue to serve more of the cities residents than a private airfield.

I love these Friends of the Parks morons.

“No! We don’t need a privately funded Lakefront attraction that will bring in buckets of money that Chicago desperately needs!”

I can’t overlook the corruption in the City and Burbs. It’s getting more and more ridiculous by the day.

Totally unrelated, but I do love me an Irish girl.

That would be great. I got FP COTD yesterday,* so if I got banned from Jezebel, it'd be a Gawker Media hat-trick.

*But I’m still gray, because Ballaban is a cruel mistress.

Something tells me to follow the money. Do these FOTP nimrods get a cut of the revenue when this lot is used?
